Mix & Matching: Patterns

Mix & Matching: Patterns

Mix & Matching: Patterns
1. Build upon one bold or large scale pattern. Start with one fabric or pattern that you love and use that as your main pattern to help find coordinating patterns. (image via) 2. Choose one common denominator. Like using one color or the same color intensity (for example all earth tones or jewel tones) to connect all the various patterns in one space. (image via) (image via) 3. Layering in odd numbersWhen combining patterns, using a minimum of three is a must. (image via)   4. Vary the style of fabrics. If your main fabric is a geometric add in a polka dot, paisley and stripe into the mix next. (image via)   5. Vary the scale of patterns.Think large, medium and small prints. If one pattern is particularly bold and busy the other shouldn’t be. (image via) Here we have an example of some special order Boston Interiors fabrics in large, medium and small scales. The large print on the left is busy but is balanced by a soft small scale neutral which brings us to tip #6.   6. Add in a neutral with texture. Even a solid color adds amazing depth when it has great texture to it, plus it adds a layered feel to your space. Here's a close up of the small scale neutral fabric from above. It has so much movement to it with the raised polka dots.   7. Find inspiration. Still not sure where to start? Take notes from everyday advertising. Just like in fashion, floral and striped patterns are commonly used together in many interiors. Taking note about what a model is wearing is a great example of how to mix different patterns and scales that could easily be translated into home décor.
