Furniture Care: Rugs
There’s no doubt about it, a good rug can be an investment - one that you want to protect with proper care and maintenance. So here are some quick tips on prolonging the life of your new rug. Tip #1: Use a rug pad. A rug pad not only protects your floor from being scratched, but it will also keep your rug from slipping, increase the cushion/comfort, and deadens noise. A rug on a pad can also be vacuumed more effectively as the pad raises the rug so that air can more easily flow through it, making it possible to remove more dirt. Which brings us to… Tip #2: Vacuum your rug regularly. Shedding is normal and to be expected, especially on a new rug. During this time period additional vacuuming may be needed. Avoid vacuuming fringe if you have any. If you have a hooked rug, just be careful not to use a beater bar. Tip #3: Keep your rug out of direct sunlight to prevent fading with dyed fibers and darkening in undyed fibers. Sheer window treatments are a great way to deflect direct sunlight. However, if your rug is exposed to sunlight, it is best to rotate it 180 degrees at least once a year to insure even fading as well as wear. Tip #4: Clean spills immediately by blotting with a white absorbent cloth and soda water. Do not rub. Have your rug professionally cleaned periodically for best results. And always remember to follow your rug manufacturer’s specific maintenance recommendations for the best customized care.
